Bad luck puts paid to the efforts of Gamarino and the Bardahl Evan Bros. Honda Racing Team in the first WSS race

News published on 04/03/2017 Hot and sunny conditions at Phillip Island in Australia today for the first race of the Supersport World Championship. Following on from yesterday’s results, conditioned by a technical problem that slowed Gamarino down in practice, today the young Italian rider lined up in nineteenth position on the grid, on row seven, for a race that for safety reasons (excessive tyre wear) was reduced from 18 to 15 laps.

Christian got off the line quick, to the extent that he was able to climb to twelfth place. The Bardahl Evan Bros. Honda Racing Team rider continue to catch up but then during the third lap he was hit violently by another rider. Gamarino managed not to crash, but his water radiator broke as a result of the impact. At almost the same moment, the race was stopped by the red flag for another incident and Christian was able to come into the pits and repair the radiator before restarting. Unfortunately, though, the technicians realised that the head gasket was also broken and so it was not possible to repair Gamarino’s bike in the few minutes available to them before the race restart. An unlucky weekend therefore finished like this, failing to repay the team and rider for all of their efforts and hard work.

The next round of the Supersport World Championship is schedule to take place over the weekend of 10-12 March at the Buriram circuit in Thailand.

Christian Gamarino: “Today I made a really good start and made up ground by making a lot of passes. During the third lap though, while braking, Khairuddin suddenly changed his trajectory and came into me. This contact caused my radiator to break and the water temperature went up over the limit. The race was then stopped and I came back to the garage but the head gasket was damaged and I was unable to restart te race. I’m really sorry, especially for my team that has worked so hard and also because during those few laps I proved that we can be strong and obtain a good result. We’ll do our best to make up for this in two weeks’ time in Thailand”.
